Founded in 1963 in Antwerp, the Rubenianum aims to further the study of the visual arts of the Southern Netherlands in the 16th and the 17th centuries, a period that witnessed the flourishing of such artists as Bruegel, Rubens, Van Dyck, Jordaens, Teniers and their contemporaries. The Rubenianum’s holdings include its art historical library, photographic documentation, and numerous archives of prominent scholars in the field. The institute plays a fundamental role in publishing the Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard (1968-), the largest monographic series ever devoted to a single artist.
The Rubenianum supports research through its public reading room, fellowships, and advisory services, as well as through scholarly conferences and workshops. The Rubenianum collaborates with the RKD in making its visual holdings accessible online. The largest and most active art-historical research institute in Flanders, serving an international research community, the Rubenianum is managed by the local city government of Antwerp.
